Deer Camp Magic

This photo from 1979 won the grand prize in the 2005 Outdoor Life Photo Contest.

Timothy Leach, who owns and operates the farm, is seated at far right, the only one in the photo without a hat.

Leach, a 52-year-old dairy farmer, started building the camp, shown in the background of the photo, in 1971, during his senior year of high school.

He remembers the day that Shortsleeve took the photo and was impressed by the fact that his hunting pal managed to pull off such a high-quality shot.

"It was probably mid-day," he said, "and we were ready to go back out to the woods. Dane always had a camera back then and still does. He's a camera nut."

All of the men in the photo, avid deer hunters, were in their mid-20s and four of them, including Leach, were brothers in the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at the University of Vermont.

Wikipedia finds Sig Ep, or vice versa

Ok, I'm a bit slow on the uptake today. But I just found the Sig Ep entry on Wikipedia, the open source internet encyclopedia. They even have a link back to S&P. Cool.

We have added it to our links on the sidebar.

A few more schedule changes...

One of our intrepid correspondents tossed this over the transom last night. He notes a few more schedule additions have been added to the Conclave list...

Anybody else notice the Conclave schedule had been updated with some more session names?

A few observations ...

  • "Conversations with the Order of the Golden Heart"
(Curious as to how this is conducted)
  • "Ambassadors for Etiquette & What Women Want with Mom Nonnie"
(Her Web site is back up, by the way)
  • "Optimum Nutrition for the Active Male"
(As opposed to the sedentary one?)
  • "Crisis Communication"
(You mean, "Holy f*##ing s*&$t! Do something!" isn't communication?)
  • "Partnerships for SigEp"
    (Are we merging again?)
  • "Optimum Nutrition for the 40+ Male"
(So if you aren't "Active" you must be "40+" ... Sheesh.)
  • "Networking SigEp Style"
(As a techno-geek, I thought we were finally getting off Token Ring and on to 10-Base-T)

... And the Alumni have a reception at the Wildhorse Saloon. The undergrads are going to Hooters then (five doors down).

In any case it looks like there will be plenty to take your mind off of shooting bottle rockets at the plastic plants.

Consent Day to raise awareness

Is this a wonderful example of "Enlightened Self-Interest", or what?

Dartmouth's third annual Consent Day will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on the lawns of Sigma Nu and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternities and Kappa Delta Epsilon sorority.

Designed to raise awareness about sexual abuse and violence, the two-hour event will feature a band, free barbecue, Ben and Jerry's ice cream and the ubiquitous free orange T-shirts emblazoned with the slogan "Consensual Sex is Hot" on the front.

A table manned by three to four sexual abuse peer advisors (SAPAs) will be asking attendees factual questions about sexual abuse to raise awareness, and whether attendees answer correctly or incorrectly, they will receive free T-shirts.

Alcohol May Have Been Involved - Conclave edition

- By Special Request -
We offer this notice as a public service.

To all "Friends of Bill W." who will be attending Conclave in Nashville this year...
As has been the tradition at past Conclaves, there will be a special meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous for anyone who 'needs a meeting'.
They will gather immediately following the Balanced Man Celebration on Thursday night.
"Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength, and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.
"Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety."
This will be an OPEN MEETING - As the term suggests, meetings of this type are open to alcoholics and their families and to anyone interested in solving a personal drinking problem or helping someone else to solve such a problem.
Check the schedule at the hotel for the exact place and time.

Thought for the Day - August 3

Keep things informal. Talking is the natural way to do business. Writing is great for keeping records and putting down details, but talk generates ideas. Great things come from our luncheon meetings which consist of a sandwich, a cup of soup, and a good idea or two. No martinis.

Stephen Yeargin - Does it have a dishwasher?

A semi-random search for SigEp related content found this:

Stephen Yeargin is a busy man. He is a member of TN Kappa, chief cook and bottle-washer of their website, editor of the UT-Martin "Pacer" newspaper, and manages to find time to take classes and have a girfriend too.

Earlier this year he wrote an essay that got him awarded a scholarship to Conclave. He blogged about it and we are pleased to present a link to it here.

...But pride must remain well founded. We recognize leadership is one of the aspects of the balanced man, and when we fail to have a brother participate in student government elections, we bring it to the forefront of conversation. A good chapter is one that knows what it has to do to achieve greatness. A great one strives for it, and refuses to accept excuses when failure happens.

In the interest of full disclosure, I met Bro. Yeargin at CLA this past February and we have become friends via email. This post, however, is based on the quality of his writing and he will be surprised to see it here.

Another fraternity chapter bites the dust .....

The Kappa Alpha fraternity national office ousted the University of Florida's chapter off campus for two years as the penalty for sending pledges on a sign-stealing spree, forcing them to rigorously exercise without water and demanding that they drive other members from bar to bar on various days of the week. All activities are considered hazing.

"Given today's climate and our own fraternity's stance against hazing, we can't tolerate that type of behavior in our chapter," said Larry Wiese, executive director of the Lexington, Va.-based organization.

The group's house on fraternity row is being closed down and Kappa Alpha will not be allowed to have a presence on campus for two years. Thirty or so members are being forced to find new housing immediately.

Family sues USM in man's drinking death

Don't ever think a suit might not be filed even after the press has died down. Most of these risk and liability cases have a significant statute of limitations and you just never know when a process server will show up at your house...

The mother of a University of Southern Mississippi alumnus has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the university, Sigma Nu Fraternity and others in connection with his alcohol-related death last year.
The suit says that Sammy Broadhead, 25, a 2002 graduate of Southern Miss, died on campus on June 25, 2004 - the same date he attended an alumni reunion at the Sigma Nu Fraternity house.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified actual and punitive damages. It says Broadhead died of "acute alcohol consumption" by participating in a drinking game.

Something doesn't pass the smell test

Now that Conclave is near the proposed legislation is beginning to leak out. Chapter delgates will be so inundated by resolutions and committees and programs they will be lucky to have 15 minutes to study all the proposals let alone understand the implications. Well, we would like to help you get a head start. Try this one on...

Hidden in a dull and tedious housekeeping resolution that purports to fix typos and bring things up to date in Article III (Government National Board of Directors) is this tidbit. Note the current and proposed versions (There will be a test - Next week - In Nashville)

Bylaws 2003 (current):

Section 45. The Executive Officer(s) of the Fraternity shall have the powers and perform such duties as prescribed by the National Board of Directors for the operation of the Headquarters and the business of the Fraternity.

Bylaws 2005 (proposed):

Section 45 47. Following the Grand Chapter Conclave, the Board of Directors shall designate an Executive Committee of the Board of Directors that shall be comprised of the Grand President, Grand Treasurer, Grand Secretary and the most senior member of the National Board of Directors.

The Grand President shall preside over any meeting of the Executive Committee. In the absence of the Grand President, the Grand Treasurer or his designee shall preside over any meeting of the Executive Committee.

The Executive Committee shall deal with issues related to personnel and compensation and shall have any other powers and authorities invested in the Board of Directors by law or by these Bylaws when the Board of Directors is not in session. The Executive Committee shall report at the next regular or special meeting of the Board of Directors all action which it has taken since the preceding meeting of the Board of Directors. Meetings of the Executive Committee may be called at any time by the Grand President or at the request of at least two (2) members of the Executive Committee.

It seems to imply the position of Executive Director (i.e. Craig Templeton) is going away. Now, we doubt that is going to happen. However, the "revision" is so very different from the original that to call it a "housekeeping" change and to stick in with a dozen or more other changes that are mostly wording clarifications seems, well, er, less than straightforward.

The new provision will create a "Star Chamber" of directors that are responsible for running the fraternity. In essence the "most senior member" of the NBD gets put into a de facto "Grand President-elect" position, virtually assuring the transitions will be well ordered and without surprises - or effective selection by the Grand Chapter delegates. If it is the will of the Grand Chapter that this be set up, so be it. Just don't shine us on by hiding things and hoping no one notices.

Lets hope the bylaws committee that reviews this resolution sees fit to pull this provision and have it stand or fall alone on its own merits. This is too significant not to be its own separate resolution.

A Formal Apology

We received this email regarding an item we published a week ago. Along with it was a request to publish so to bring the matter to an end. The text is long but in the interest of full communication we did not want to abridge or alter the thoughts of those involved by editing them. We HAVE redacted identification of individuals and the chapter involved.

From all appearances the young man is remorseful and ready to accept consequences from his chapter standards board. We take this at face value and hope others may find instruction from it.

In short, if you post something on the internet, be aware that it is not either as obscure or as anonymous as you may think. We are charged to ALWAYS act so that we are proud to call each other "Brother".

This message from the Chapter president to some of his EC members notes the consequences the young man is seeing.

D--- and T---,

I am sending you the formal apology that I received from S--- V----- last night regarding the web-posting that he made with regard to the chapter. While the letter makes it fairly clear S--- feels terrible for what he did. Essentially what it all amounts to is that S--- is a kid who for personal reasons felt compelled to create an alter-ego type identity for himself on an internet post board. He felt that telling elaborate and often insulting and offensive lies would make him seem "cool" or "tough", while at the same time he never thought anyone, not even his close friends, would ever see them. He completely admits what he did, and he feels terrible for the shadow that he has cast on the chapter's reputation. As I asserted early on, his postings in NO WAY reflect the values of the chapter, and as he admits himself, they are elaborate lies and fantasy designed to enhance his own image. While it may seem inexcusable I can't help but feel bad. This is a young man, who like many others, suffers from personal issues and insecurities that often lead to such behavior, and after speaking with him for nearly 2 hours last night I can not fully express the extent of his desire for contrition. I would personally like to send this to the alumni list serve a little later today along with a note from me, but I figured I would send it to the two of you first. As of now S--- has been suspended from the fraternity, and a standards board meeting is being scheduled for the first week back to school. Believe me when I say that we will pursue the most severe actions in dealing with S---, and he is well aware that expulsion is a possibility he may very well have to accept. I have yet to talk to nationals but I expect to hear from them today, with the likelihood being that they will see this issue as what it is, a case of individual error and not chapter culpability or guilt in any way, and I fully expect that we will be allowed to settle the issue in house.

Regards,
M---

Dear Brother President,

I am writing this letter to accept full responsibility for what amounts to the greatest mistake I have ever made. As you are aware, I am the author of web postings that paint our chapter and its members in a very disconcerting light. These postings portray myself, our brothers, and our chapter as vandalizing, alcoholic, disrespectful, chauvinistic animals. My actions, I now realize, have put myself, our chapter, and most importantly, our brotherhood to shame. There is no way to describe how reckless and downright brainless my actions were.

I wish there was a clear explanation for what I did, but there simply is not. The reason I made those web postings at all is confusing even to me. It was a combination of misplaced values, misguided pride, and utter naivete. Those postings were written as a farcical joke, concocted as a creative outlet completely from my imagination. I wanted to impress readers on the internet with how cool I was, and how cool my fraternity was. Obviously, all I succeeded in doing was making my brothers and I look completely reprehensible. I cannot put into words the source of pride that my chapter has become for me; though my actions would seemingly indicate otherwise, all I wanted to do was get a rise out of readers and make them envious of the chapter I love (not for childish, idiotic antics, but for the strength of its bonds of brotherhood.)

Because these postings fail so miserably to show my chapter in the light that inspires my pride, I believe they clearly depict my naivete. I was naive to believe I could elicit envy with such culpable tales; in reality, all they did was misrepresent our fraternity. Likewise, I was naive to believe I could make such postings without negative consequences; in reading the words I wrote months before, I can only shake my head at their stupidity. Would anyone believe that I honestly never thought my words would be read by anyone who could be offended not as a shocked reader, but as a brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon, hearing pompous tales of condemnable activities in the name of our fraternity? I believed as I was posting that the anonymity of the internet would protect me from the lies I was telling. I learned that lesson very quickly.

I have tried to explain my actions as best I can, but at the same time, I cannot dwell on the past. I must step forth to accept the consequences for my actions, and try to set right what I have wronged. Please try to understand that I never made those postings maliciously, just naively. I never stopped to consider the damage it could do to the chapter and our brotherhood; had I understood, it goes without saying that I would never have made any postings on the internet or elsewhere. With this in mind, I have done what I could to rectify the situation. When I was first contacted about the matter, I returned your call as quickly as I could (part of my internship is watching cases and there was no way I could leave surgery to make a phone call.) After returning your call, I was planning to go straight home from the hospital in order to remove what I could from the internet; I spent most of an anxious hour at the hospital trying to find a way to leave early before I finally vomited from nerves and was told to go home.

Once I arrived at home, I immediately went to work to remove my posting and any related materials, in order to preserve what I could of the chapter's integrity. I immediately contacted the webmaster and requested he remove the subject matter in question. It is not the policy of the website to remove such content, but I implored him for some sympathy, and while it still remains to date, I am confident it will be removed or otherwise altered to be less detrimental to our chapter soon. I have spent the better part of 8 hours today working on this and have finally hit a point where all I can do is wait. Likewise, I am waiting to be contacted by Nationals in order to explain the situation and my actions to them.

I am now fully aware of my actions and their effects on this chapter and my place in it. I recognize that I have put not only myself, but 90 other brothers in jeopardy, and I can assure you that my only goal in this matter is to save the chapter as much face as possible and protect the innocent brothers that are at risk. I know that no punishment will undo the damage I have caused, but I am ready to accept whatever punishment the chapter deems fit. If I have any place to ask for mercy or forgiveness, let me ask that my misdeeds be considered along with my intentions, and that my loyalty to this chapter not be ignored due to my lack of foresight.

Regretfully,
S--- V------
