The New York Times: Miss. Students Question Safety After Fire

Note: Already a growing concern regarding housing safety, the recent tragedy at Ole Miss will no doubt result in increased attention to fire codes and safety measures in fraternity dwellings across the country. Housing corporations and Universities generally are diligent with annual/biannual inspections and make sure that buildings meet the "current" fire codes. But is this enough? How many houses have you been in where house residents have disabled fire and smoke detectors in their living quarters or have shut off the fire alarm system to prevent the annoyance of a prankster from setting off an early morning wake-up call? Diligence once or twice a year in making sure everything works is not enough. These systems need to be functioning all day, every day. Have a room check plan and evacuation plan in place. Unfortunately this is a serious wake-up call to Universities, Chapters, Housing Corporations, and particularly the individual members to take this matter seriously. Your life or the life of your fraternity brother or sister depends on it.
