Because of recent hazing incidents, the board of directors of Sigma Alpha Epsilon has closed the Maryland Beta chapter. The Maryland Beta chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded on campus in 1943. The decision to close the chapter was made by the National office with assistance and cooperation from the University of Maryland as well as the housing corporation. This decision is effective immediately. As of today, October 21, 2004, no activities will be permitted in the name of Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Maryland. The chapter was found responsible for multiple violations of the National risk management policies, as well as the Code of Student Conduct and Maryland state laws. Those individuals currently living in the house at #4 Fraternity Row will be required to vacate the property by October 29, 2004.
Closing a chapter is a difficult decision for a University or any National to make, and it signifies a breakdown in the very foundation of the fraternity and sorority purpose. Many chapters on campus continue to struggle with alcohol abuse, underage drinking, hazing, and other violations of risk management policies. This should serve as a wake up call for the chapters who remain on campus. Although our community has made great strides toward living our values, it is clear there are still events and activities that go on that threaten their very existence on campus. Maryland has lost six chapters in the past four years from risk management, hazing and alcohol violations.
