Another Sig Ep in Harm's Way

Marine with county ties part of the battle
U.S. Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Jerome Greco is in the thick of it.

Greco, whose mother, Maryalice Smith, lives in Washington Township, is an infantry officer with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) taking part in Operation Phantom Fury in Fallujah, Iraq.
...
Greco was offered an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy, but chose instead to go to Penn at the Navy's expense.

"He excels in everything he does," his mother said. Greco has been an Eagle Scout, won poetry contests in school, was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, spent a year as a Rotary International exchange student in Romania.

Greco decided in his freshman year in college to switch to the Marine Corps.

"One of his goals might be to stay in the corps as a career Marine," Smith said. She remembers asking him, "Why the heck would you want to be the first person on the firing line?"

She answers the question herself: "He pushes himself to all the limits."
