Louisiana Supreme Court suspends judge over blackface Halloween costume
Saying his conduct brought Louisiana's judiciary into disrepute, the Louisiana Supreme Court Monday suspended a Terrebone Parish judge for six months without pay after the judge, who is white, wore an "Afro" style wig, black face paint and a prison uniform to a Halloween party in 2003.
Judge Timothy C. Ellender was suspended without pay for a year and a day, but the justices deferred six months of the suspension.
Two of the seven justices dissented, saying the punishment, which amounts to a loss of more than $50,000 in income, was too harsh.
