CANDLE OR ELECTRICAL CORD SUSPECTED AS CAUSE
San Jose State University is scrambling to find housing for 30 students displaced by an accidental three-alarm fire that swept through the second floor of the Delta Upsilon fraternity house early on Friday, Jan. 7 San Jose fire Capt. Juan Diaz said a resident of the big house at 210 S. 11th St. called at 12:49 a.m. to report the fire, which was under control about an hour later. When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy fire inside a room on the second floor that was spreading into the hallway and nearby rooms. After calling in a third alarm, firefighters attacked the blaze from inside. But by the time the fire was out, the entire second floor was heavily damaged by smoke and flames, Diaz said, and the first floor was damaged by dripping water. All nine of the residents who were home when the fire broke out escaped the blaze without injury. School is not in session yet after the holidays.
