Columbia U Overrules Greeks, Putting Fiji Back on Map

The Columbia Univ. Administration will allow FIJI to come back on campus even though the Greek Council has voted to reject their rechartering proposal.

...Columbia’s Office of Residential Programs informed the IGC last week that it would overturn the Council’s ruling on the troubled fraternity’s readmission and allow Fiji to return to Columbia. In fall 2004, the IGC voted down a proposal to recharter the Columbia chapter of Fiji, long absent from Columbia’s campus.

Many Council members were upset with the University’s overruling, and said that it violated the body’s decision-making powers.

“I feel like if [Columbia] is going to override the decisions we make, then it’s completely pointless for us to be here,” said Dan Pizzarello, CC ’06 and president of Sigma Phi Epsilon, at last night’s meeting.

But the University said that the override is well within its purview.

“The way the by-laws are set up, IGC actually makes a recommending vote, not a binding one,” said Francy Magee, assistant dean of Residential Programs, speaking before the Council.

One must wonder if the University will be getting a sudden boost in their "development efforts" from well heeled FIJI alums now.
