Why is it that some folks just don't get the memo?
ESTERO — Florida Gulf Coast University has booted a fraternity off campus after a case of what administrators call "inappropriate behavior." For the next two semesters, Sigma Phi Epsilon will not be recognized by the school.
Administrators suspended the fraternity after receiving a list of activities for a scavenger hunt.
"The list of items is very demeaning to women, to poor people and the homeless. Just not the type of activity we want to see from our Greek organization, said school spokeswoman Susan Evans.
"It does not speak well of the values of our university holds and the values we're trying to instill in our students."
For Sigma Phi Epsilon, which was already on probation for fighting and alcohol violations, it was the last straw.
"They are, in our eyes, no longer an FGCU fraternity," Evans said. "They're not allowed to meet as a fraternity, they cannot even reserve space on campus."
After a two-semester suspension, the future of the fraternity is uncertain.
The president of Sigma Phi Epsilon did not return calls for comment.
But the fraternity did respond to the suspension in the student newspaper, calling the scavenger hunt, "an unfortunate blemish on a record filled with service and leadership to the community, which does not accurately reflect the views or opinions of the organization or its members."
The letter also noted that no one was forced to participate in any of the activities.
