More on water intoxication death at Chico State

A Chico State University student died Wednesday morning following what police have termed "fraternity pledge activities."

Matthew William Carrington, 21, formerly of Concord, was pledging Chi Tau fraternity and collapsed in the basement of the house at 440 W. Fourth St. sometime before 5 a.m.

Authorities are looking into reports that he and other pledges may have been forced to drink large quantities of water and exercise heavily, inducing a sometimes deadly condition called hyponatremia.

A member of the fraternity said the man was heard snoring, then went silent and appeared to stop breathing.

Police and emergency medical personnel were called and arrived at 5:05 a.m. The victim was taken by ambulance to Enloe Medical Center, with technicians reportedly performing CPR on the way. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Fraternity has faced problems before

Chico State University and Greek officials say Wednesday's death of a 21-year-old student occurred at a renegade fraternity long known to stir up trouble in the community.

The Chi Tau house on West Fourth Street is the site of frequent police responses for fighting, alcohol violations and open parties.

That's why the fraternity is no longer recognized by its former national affiliate, Delta Sigma Phi, the university or the Interfraternity Council the governing body for fraternities.

"They're considered a rogue fraternity," said Nick Miller, former IFC president.

Delta Sigma Phi revoked the local fraternity's charter in 2002, following several violations involving alcohol. Chi Tau formed thereafter and has run independently ever since.

A Chi Tau pledge died about 5 a.m. today after he collapsed during a pledge event, Chico police said.

"It doesn't appear that alcohol played any part in his death," Sgt. Dave Barrow said.

Barrow said 21-year-old Matthew William Carrington was participating in a pledge event that involved physical activity and drinking large quantities of water.

Carrington's cause of death has not been identified, and his medical history is unknown. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Some cases of water intoxication can cause brain tissues to swell, which may lead to a seizure, coma or death, according to About.com.
