UTM IFC wins awards at regional conferenceMembers of the UTM Interfraternity Council attended the Southeastern Interfraternal Conference in Atlanta from February 17-20.
Fourteen members representing the Interfraternity Council attended the conference: [...(list of attendees)]; and Brad Hadley of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Louis Ragsdale, coordinator of greek life, was also in attendance.
UTM’s IFC received second in five categories in the small-school division including Outstanding Website, Alumni Relations, Outstanding Publication, Publications and Community Service and Philanthropy. UTM also received a Fraternal Excellence plaque, recognizing the IFC that achieved 100 percent in all categories: IFC management, judicial processes, leadership development, legal concerns, philanthropy and community service, public relations, scholarship and academic achievement, recruitment and social programming. UTM’s IFC was also one of the eight universities in the southeast to receive the “Overall Fraternal Excellence Award."
I had occasion to meet the paper's editor, Shephen Yeargin, earlier this year at a CLA and we talked about the advantages of having Greeks involved in campus communications. He told me that he tried to maintain a 'journalistic distance' as editor, but that several of the reporters are Greek and they tend to identify any Greek angle to a story.
Proof of the concept can be seen in earlier stories S&P has picked up from the "Pacer" - here, here, here, and here. We did not set out to become a cheerleader for UT-Martin or for TN Kappa, we look for stories wherever they happen, but the "Pacer" does have a knack for 1) finding the Greek - especially SigEp - angle and 2) getting noticed on Google.
