The UC Berkeley chapter of Pi Kappa Phi was suspended by the university yesterday from participating in any fraternity activities, after what police called a hazing incident in which a pledge was shot with a BB gun more than 30 times.
The interim suspension, announced by UC Berkeley officials yesterday afternoon, effectively makes the fraternity a boardinghouse for “residential purposes, such as eating and sleeping,” according to a university statement.
University officials could not be reached for comment yesterday, and officials from Pi Kappa Phi and the campus’s Interfraternity Council did not return calls for comment.
The national Pi Kappa Phi organization had already suspended the chapter’s operations over the April 8 incident and the Berkeley chapter could face losing its charter permanently.
On top of the suspension, the campus is charging the fraternity with physical abuse, hazing and use of a weapon stemming from the incident, all violations of the Student Code of Conduct.
The fraternity could face future chapter restrictions or complete expulsion from the university’s Greek system pending the Office of Student Life investigation.
