The press releases keep getting shipped our way. New people like Wynonna Judd are now attending. There’s even a counter on sigep.org that tells us how many days remain. Conclave is right around the corner. But, how many undergraduates can actually afford to go?
Most college kids can look around their room until they find enough change to buy the next case of beer. Sometimes they might have to knock on the neighbor’s door and see if they have any change to donate to the cause. And, for those really desperate times they can start going through the vehicle to find the change that was thrown down from the last three in the morning McDonald’s run.
That’s part of the college experience. But despite how many seat cushions we look under the average college student probably isn’t going to find $300 to register for Conclave. But, worst of all, $300 isn’t even the beginning. You’ve still got to pay for travel, hotel and yes: food expenses. The $300 only covers three meals. If you plan on running or golfing get ready to reach into your wallet again. At least that money goes to support Youth Aids.
No doubt Conclave will be a great experience, if you can afford to make it there. You would think the largest collegiate fraternity would come up with a way to host a national convention so that more undergraduates could attend. The website says that many pivotal turning points and decisions are made at Conclave. Maybe this year the grand chapter can come up with a way to allow more of our brothers to be a part of the fun. If nothing more, just think of us.
Not all college kids can go and eat cake. Hell, I’m almost out of Ramen noodles.
