Purdue fraternity loses its recognition until year 2010

A campus appeals board meeting on Friday upheld the dean of students’ decision to withdraw recognition of a campus fraternity.

The Nu Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi’s recognition will be withdrawn until 2010.

The fraternity’s chapter is upset with the decision.

Alumni adviser for the fraternity, Shy-Quon Ely, said the chapter is looking at its options on what to do in the future.

"We will be seeking advice from some of our more prestigious alumni and talking with our attorney about what steps we take next," he said.

The dean of students’ office withdrew recognition after conducting an investigation on an incident at a Feb. 12 party at the Delta Sigma Phi house.

Pablo Malavenda, associate dean of students for student activities and organizations, said the party was contrary to many "rules and regulations of the University, as well as state and local laws."

Among the infractions are allegations of underage drinking, fighting and possession of drugs and weapons.

Malavenda presented his findings to the appeals board and asked that the punishment be upheld.

"It was a sad day for everybody involved," he said.
