Guest Post - Proposal for NBD Oversight

Justin Case sent in this submission. Here it is as a "guest post".

Wordjunky,

I thought about making this a comment to one of the NBD selection entries, but I think it's a little too long and a little too tangental.

"Another reform option that would be complimentary to making the NBD nomination process more transparent and fair, would be to add a NBD oversight/compliance committee.

The purpose of the committee would be observe the decisions made at Conclave, then observe HQ's and the NBD's actions over the next two years. Every Conclave afterward they would make a report to the Grand Chapter on HQ's and the NBD's actions regarding prior legislation. This would mitigate to a certain extent the problem with delegates turning over every Conclave and would make HQ's and the NBD more accountable for their actions between Conclaves. HQ's and the NBD must give the committee full access to information, and the committee should attend all meetings of the NBD. The Grand Chapter should also be given contact information for the committee so members can voice complaints directly.

Members of the committee must meet certain requirements. All members should be required to be "independent," meaning that they may not have worked for HQ's in the past, may not have served on the NBD, and may not serve on the NBD for a period of years after leaving the committee (say five years) to keep the committee from turning into a brown nosers club for NBD hopefuls. At least one member of the committee must be a Greeklife "expert," with a masters degree in college student personel or a related degree, and direct experience working with Greeklife for a college or university. All other committee members should also have volunteer experience at the local level (regional experience an added plus). The committee members should be chosen by the Grand Chapter at Conclave (maybe by the one of the NBD nominating committees, maybe by another committee) with the needed transparency reforms. The above provisions are designed to ensure the committee looks at things from a different angle than our traditional leadership and that their loyalties will lie more towards the Grand Chapter than HQ's and the NBD.

There it is for your consideration. Hope to see it, something like it, or some other meaningful reform come out of Conclave this year!"

Stick it in if you think it's worthy.

Justin

Yup. It's worthy. Thanks, Justin.
