UND groups raise funds

UND students are mulling over a big time donation for the Big Easy.

Student leaders on campus, from Greek organizations to student government to the school's Reserve Officer Training Corps battalion, have launched "Operation Southern Comfort - UND Students for Katrina Relief" to aid students and their families displaced by Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana and Mississippi.

Other plans are for ROTC members to team up with Alpha Chi Omega sorority sisters for a pancake feed at the sorority house on Cambridge Street. There's been a pledge by a family member of one of the sorority members to match the donations.

Members of Sigma Phi Epsilon, a school fraternity, will go door to door soliciting funds for the cause.

Also, the student pep squad known as the Sioux Crew plans to sell specially designed T-shirts that read "I (heart) New Orleans" during Potato Bowl week.

"What they are focusing on is separate fund-raising efforts, but trying to combine it all so it goes to one place," Haskins said.

"Potato Bowl"? I don't believe that is one of the BCS series.
