We just got a notice where I work (a major Houston energy company) that volunteers are needed at the Astrodome, where they are bringing the refugees from New Orleans' Superdome.
I live close to the Astrodome and ride the light rail by it every day. This morning busses and people were streaming in. We could see folks wandering about still mostly in a daze. It was eerie.
If you live and work in Houston, or for that matter in any of the many places where shelters are being set up, there is probably an opportunity for service. Those 'in the real world' can probably plug into their corporation's efforts. If you are an undergrad maybe you can get a group from your chapter to work for a few hours. Wear letters, lend a hand, get props. Everyone wins.
If you are out of the area you can still set up a fundraiser or join one of the projects that will be surely springing up all over the country.
Look for me at the 'Dome. I'll be chopping wood and carrying water.
