Colleges seeking ways to reduce energy expenses

Winter is coming, and with the highest prices in memory for energy colleges are scrambling to manage expenses.
Clarkson may close buildings

Clarkson University, Potsdam, has proposed closing two downtown buildings, Snell Hall and Congdon House, to reduce its natural gas consumption. Both buildings are heated using natural gas.

Congdon House is home to two fraternities, Sigma Chi and Sigma Phi Epsilon, totaling 34 students, and the Outing Club. The proposal, suggested by President Anthony G. Collins, would move all students housed in Congdon House to dormitories on the hill campus. No savings estimate or timetable was available for the plan.

Until then, the school is emphasizing to faculty and students the need to conserve energy.

"We're taking a more proactive position when it comes to energy conservation," Clarkson spokesman Rick D. Burt said.

The college is reducing the lighting use in academic buildings and lowering the temperatures in its buildings a few degrees at night. Budget numbers weren't available.

This will be a serious issue for all the chapters with houses this year. If you have not reassessed your budget for heat, better get ready for some rude surprises. AVC's should take note too.
