WMU Greeks aware of hazing consequences

According to this article at least, Western Michigan Fraternities "get it". The IFC Pres. (A Sig Ep) is interviewed.
Greek organizations at Western Michigan University acknowledge that while it has been a problem in the past, hazing is not currently happening here.

“I don't think it's as big of a problem at WMU as it is other places,” said Keith Becklin, president of WMU's Interfraternity Council and member of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Becklin said it is more noted in Greek life because fraternities are generally targeted for it. He said some students pledge Greek organizations for the wrong reasons, including the stereotype of hard partying.

He said Greek organizations operate under a no-tolerance policy regarding hazing, as stated in the Registered Student Organizations handbook and under IFC policy.

According to those policies, “No chapter shall conduct hazing activities. Hazing activities are those defined as: any action taken or situation created intentionally, whether on or off fraternity or sorority premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule.”

The policy also states that those activities may include, but are not limited to, the use of alcohol.

Becklin said Sigma Phi Epsilon strictly follows this policy. Various Sigma rituals are incorporated into initiation of new members, but if hazing were to occur, the fraternity would be severely punished, he said.
