The Good Scholar Election was founded in 1990 by the then- active TAK chapter of TEP to raise funds for the American Cancer Society after their faculty adviser, Dr. Alvin Cohen, professor emeritus of economics, was diagnosed with cancer.

This year the election was run by Sigma Phi Epsilon, and it was dedicated to the memory of Razi Sarlati, a TAK/TEP member who died of cancer in 2004.

In its first 15 years, the campaign raised $532,167 for the American Cancer Society.
