Carpentry crews did minimal work on the room to ready it for habitation, McNaughton said. Because construction crews at York were behind schedule with other projects, he lived in a guest room in his Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house before moving in halfway through the semester. Spare carpet replaced 20-year-old flooring, and the paint on the walls hasn't been retouched in 10 years, McNaughton said. He placed air fresheners throughout the room to ward off smells of age.
"There had been pumpkins stored there since last Thanksgiving, and it had mildewed and rotted through the carpet, but they didn't get special carpet," he said.
Sounds like some of the places I lived when I was in the "student ghetto".
