Old Sig Ep House restored to glory days



Most of the rooms in the Col Benjamin Stephenson House have been furnished and are being readied for the opening March 2, 2006.

For $1.3 million lets hope it has been restored. This historic 184 yr old house is now a showplace.
Now, after a meticulous, $1.3 million purchase and restoration, it seems likely to become one of the area's more interesting historic sites. The house, at 409 South Buchanan Street in Edwardsville, will be open to the public beginning March 2.

"This is one of the few places where architectural significance and historical significance come together," said Sid Denny, a member of the Friends board.

With help from a $500,000 state grant, the city bought the deteriorating structure from Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity in 1999 and turned it over to the Friends organization for renovation. Private donations and $200,000 from the city of Edwardsville helped complete the project.
