- A freshman at East Tennessee State University says she was kicked off the cheerleading squad because its coach objected to her job at a local Hooters, part of a chain of restaurants that features waitresses dressed as, well, cheerleaders. The student, Kimberly Sams, told the Kingsport Times-News that the cheerleading coach removed her from the team, without warning, three weeks ago, saying that being a "Hooters Girl" was incompatible with being a cheerleader at the university, which is located in Johnson City, Tenn. According to the Kingsport newspaper, a university policy declares that cheerleaders can be dismissed if they draw "unwanted, unfair, negative attention" to the squad or sully its "image and reputation." The policy says nothing about outside jobs.
- A freshman-initiation ritual went clumsily awry on Monday night at the California Institute of Technology, ordinarily a place where one would expect to find paragons of cleverness. The ritual, which involved a nighttime descent on a cliffside trail by two dozen freshmen attired in Superman capes and tutus, ended at about 3 a.m. on Tuesday, when the initiates found their path blocked by a landslide, according to a report by the Associated Press. The students, who were being initiated into a dormitory, summoned help from a local search-and-rescue squad. One of the rescuers said the Caltech freshmen lacked flashlights and warm clothing, although they did have "distinctive headgear -- hats with antennas and horns, that kind of stuff."
