Funds' over - everybody out.

A long running and very successful philanthropy at Lehigh is coming to and end.
Alvin Cohen, the Good Scholar Election’s faculty adviser and a professor emeritus of economics, has decided to stop advising the fundraiser after 16 years.

In the last 16 years, the Good Scholar Election has raised $597,630 in total, Cohen said.

Evan Gyllenhaal, ’07, the GSE committee chair, said Cohen’s reasons for discontinuing the GSE are associated with his age and family.

Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity ran the 15th and 16th elections in 2004 and 2005.

“They did an exemplary job,” Cohen said. “Their total in the 16th, $55,327, was historically the third highest.”

Cohen has asked the committee not to continue the Good Scholar Election, said Tyler Rock, ’06, president of Sig Ep.

“We’re allowed to use the same ideas,” Rock said, “just not the name.”

Gyllenhaal added to what Rock said.

“He would like to protect the name and achievements of the GSE, as well as his own achievements,” Gyllenhaal said, “which isn’t a reflection upon our handling, but instead a safeguard against a changing campus culture.”
We are certain that the Lehigh Sig Eps will be able to leverage what they learned to create another successful philanthropy event.

But wait! The school paper editorial board is suspicious.
