• ROSES to the members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Oregon State University who are involved in the “Balanced Man” program, a national program that harkens to its ancient Greek origins with its emphasis on academic and personal excellence.
Participants at Sigma Phi have turned around their fraternity’s reputation in five years by maintaining at least a “B” academic average, being personally responsible and raising Sigma Phi’s public service profile.
This is in sharp contrast to the reputation that the fraternity had in 2001, when police wrote 26 citations related to minors’ consumption of alcohol at a party that cost fraternity members thousands of dollars in fines.
It’s only fair to mention that the recent arrest of the OSU student body president on drunken driving charges aren’t the whole story.
Many OSU students are both concerned about and involved in turning around the school’s unwanted reputation for alcohol-related hooliganism. Students are still the most powerful force in any effort to ensure that their college years provide memories that they can be proud of — and that they can recall.
