Sig Eps happy with their leadership program

Well, at least the ones at Iowa the "other" university in Indiana.
When Wes Anderson looked to join a fraternity last school year, he wanted one that encouraged leadership from the start.

Anderson, a University of Iowa sophomore from Waterloo, now is president of Sigma Phi Epsilon's UI chapter -- one of 192 Sig Ep chapters nationwide that have implemented the Balanced Man Program.

Sig Ep's national communications director Scott Thompson said the general idea behind Balanced Man is derived from ancient Greek philosophy that stresses development of one's mind and body to achieve a fulfilling life.

That was not the case in the late 1980s, Thompson said, when more and more attention was focused on fraternities for "out of control behavior."

Nick Sarcone, a UI law student who joined Sigma Phi Epsilon as an undergraduate at St. Louis University, said the Balanced Man Program attracted him to the fraternity. Sarcone now is the UI chapter adviser, counselor.

"You learn from the get-go in rush that Sig Ep is not about pledging or hazing or that type of activity," Sarcone said. "It's about bringing guys in and teaching them how to be a leader."
