UND SigEp running for City Council

They say "You can't fight City Hall." Well, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
The City Council race in Grand Forks' Ward 2 is becoming crowded, with four candidates filing petitions at City Hall within the past two weeks.

The most famous of them is radio talk show personality Mike McNamara, who is serving in the Marines in Iraq. But he's got competition in the form of Jon Dorner, Tom Kenville and Peder Rice, according to the city finance office.
[...]
Rice, who grew up in Minot, is a sophomore at UND and chairman of the local College Republicans. He's also a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, though he stressed that he has little in common with the stereotypical drunk, loud and obnoxious frat guy.

In fact, Rice said, he favors a recent noise ordinance that many students dislike.
[...]
Rice said he and his college friends always thought it would be fun to try to run a political campaign. It just so happens, he said, that they nominated him to run.

Homeowners had complained that too many homes in the area were being converted into rental units, destroying the neighborhood's family atmosphere. Though the homeowners said they weren't against students, who make up the majority of the renters, the students felt otherwise.
[...]
Rice said he felt that a responsible young person such as him on the council could help bridge the gap with UND students.
Drunk? Loud? Obnoxious? I'm shocked! Hey, let's have some fun and nominate a guy for City Council. The election night party should be awesome!
