Midterms and classes temporarily let out after a chemical spill in a research laboratory led to evacuations of at least six buildings on North Campus.
At about the same time, a tree-cutting crew caused a transformer to short out, causing power outages at Norris University Center, the University Library and various off-campus buildings.
[...]Fraternity members at Sigma Phi Epsilon, 2341 Sheridan Rd., took advantage of the canceled classes by pulling out their stash of hot dogs and hamburgers and holding an impromptu cookout.
“Every Friday night we cook out,” said Communications sophomore Max Pachman. “We just started a little early today.”
