More Employers Doing Online Background Checks
More and more employers are doing online background checks on recent college graduates who have applied for jobs. By doing Google searches on potential employees or hunting for information about them on social-networking sites like Facebook or MySpace, employers can often find plenty of incriminating information.
For instance, one college student who had published an article online called "Lying Your Way to the Top" found himself getting passed over by recruiters. But after he had the article removed, he quickly landed some interviews and got job offers. Some companies ask their interns to do the Internet sleuthing on their peers. (The New York Times)
For information on what colleges are doing to try to educate their students about the potential pitfalls of sharing too many personal details online, see an article in The Chronicle by Brock Read.
