Brotherhood is more than Fraternity

Last night I lost a 25-year friend. He was not a Sig Ep, but in many ways we shared a similar brotherhood.
Some of my early memories of him involve playing "Pac-Man" at a nearby convienience store. We would take turns - well, I would take a turn and then watch him for 10 minutes as he ate his way through multiple levels. I won't say he was obsessed, but he had his own special glove so the joystick wouldn't rub a blister. And he needed it. After he finished frying the upper level circuits of the game we would enjoy an "adult beverage", or several, together.

When I got married to my second wife they [Bill and Martha] came to the wedding and the party afterwards to help me celebrate. We all ended up in the condo swimming pool somehow and I'm told everyone had a grand time. I think Bill "helped" me get into the swim of things. A few months later Bill and Martha decided to make their arrangement official. Unfortunately I was not able to help them celebrate their joy because I had celebrated way too much the night before.
It takes a lifetime to make a lifetime friend/brother. Look around at the men in your chapter. I can promise you will stay in contact with some of them for the rest of your life. I am in a city over 1000 miles from where I grew up and went to school, but there are four of us here who were all in the chapter at the same time - some 30 years ago. We still get together to watch football and swap lies about each other. It never goes away as long as you hold on to it.

Great Smoky: Bill Auvenshine; Good-bye to a 25-year friendship.
