A USM student and Sigma Phi Epsilon member died Saturday morning in a car accident at the intersection of 40th Avenue and Lincoln Road.
Terry Lee "T.J." Thomas, 23, of Hattiesburg, died around 2 a.m., according to a news report that ran in the Sunday edition of the Hattiesburg American newspaper. Details of the accident could not be confirmed by LaShana Sorrell, public information officer for the Hattiesburg Police Department.
Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. in Gulfport at the O'Neal Road Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Homes with burial in D'Iberville Memorial Park.
While at USM, Thomas received a bachelor's in political science and had been accepted to both Yale and Tulane law schools. He was involved in student government, student council, the reflections club, various student associations and was an honorary Pi Beta Phi big brother.
Friend Tommy Cullinan, graduate student and former president of Sigma Phi Epsilon, said Thomas was a happy, energetic person who was full of life and loved to be involved in everything."I'll always remember the kind of person he was and the way he never took anything for granted," said Cullinan. "He always wanted to help someone. He always had advice to give."
