UD disciplines sorority, requires $2,300 restitution

DAYTON - The University of Dayton has placed the campus chapter of Alpha Phi sorority on one-year probation for damaging a downtown Dayton banquet hall during a social event in March.
The chapter must make full restitution to the university for $2,309, which UD paid to the hall’s owners for repairs.
Chapter members also must attend sessions on alcohol abuse and write apologies to the UD and Dayton communities, the university said.
During the probation, which extends through May 15, 2011, all sorority events must be alcohol-free and the group is prohibited from holding events off campus.
University officials announced the decision of a UD disciplinary board on Thursday, May 27. Alpha Phi International placed the chapter on probation April 5 .
The sorority is cooperating with the disciplinary process, said Sister Annette Schmeling, UD’s vice president for student development and dean of students.
“The university community is holding these women accountable for their behavior,” Schmeling said. “The disciplinary action holds them responsible, and at the same time leads them to grow and learn from their mistakes.”
Students attending an Alpha Phi formal at The Deli at Webster Street, 32 Webster St., ripped the sink off a wall in the men’s room, broke glasses, urinated and vomited on carpet, stole alcohol, and sprayed mustard and ketchup on walls and floors, police said.
Several citations for public intoxication and disorderly conduct were issued, but no one was arrested.
Miami University in Oxford this month suspended the campus chapters of Pi Beta Phi and Alpha Xi Delta for drunken behavior at formals.
In West Virginia, the Parkersburg Art Center, which claims it was trashed while hosting an Ohio University sorority event said its insurance company is paying $44,000 to cover damage.
An attorney for the center said it’s withdrawing its threat to sue the school’s Pi Beta Phi chapter, but said insurance adjustors could still sue. The gallery says there were food fights, drinks were dumped out on floors, and a sink was pulled from a wall during a March 6 winter formal.
