Woman's death at UW fraternity ruled suicide
SEATTLE - The King County Medical Examiner has ruled the death of a young woman at a University of Washington fraternity house Wednesday a suicide.
Seattle police say 20-year-old Carly Henley's body was found in a back stairwell outside the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at NE 47th Street and 21st Avenue NE.
The Medical Examiner said the cause of death was ruled a suicide by asphyxia due to hanging.
The fraternity says, other than renting a parking spot on the property, Henley had no close connection to anyone at the frat house.
"As far as I know, she knew men in our frat nominally. Nothing more than a hello," said Joe Newland with Phi Delta Theta.
Henley was a singer and songwriter who wrote on her Facebook page, "I love music and sharing my soul with the world, and would love nothing more than to pursue this dream of mine!" Some of her songs are posed on YouTube.
She was a junior majoring in women's studies. Henley played guitar at venues in Seattle and at 909 Coffee and Wine in Burien where she worked during the summer.
"She loved her family. Loved life. She was fun to be around," said Kelly Ricci, owner of 909.
The university sent an e-mail to students with information on grief counseling. Counselors spent Thursday at the Delta Gamma house, where Henley lived.
"They're heart broken, devastated. With their love and support of each other, they'll get through it," said Kari Brown with Delta Gamma.
A candlelight vigil will be held for Henley Friday, October 8, 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Tau Kappa Epsilon, 4520 21st Avenue NE.
