What is brotherhood? Where's the mutual respect? Where's the willingness to sacrifice for one another? Where's the love? Already this year too many young men have been promised the prize of friendship, companionship, brotherly love - that helping hand in time of trouble, the mutual rejoicing in time of joy, the sharing in time of need, and the promise of being something bigger than yourself. Some of them may survive and eventually find these prized ideals. For others, these things will never be obtained because of senseless tragedy. For way too many, the fatal flaw will come in the belief that they had found fraternity. Such was the case for Gordie Bailey, who thought the brotherhood of Chi Psi was where these lofty ideals resided. If you think that "fraternity" is alive and well on America's campuses, think again. Fraternities and sororities are breeding generations of men and women who have no concept of the core values of their respective organizations much less any desire to become better human beings by living those ideals. This author has read the Rituals of many fraternities and sororities and I have not seen one yet that gives instructions to embarass, haze, psychologically, emotionally, or physically abuse another individual. We may never be able to fully explain what in the human psyche is so appealing about making another person feel inferior or helpless; but, we should strive every day to bring out the best in human kind not take human kind down. It is happening over and over again that Greek organizations are being eliminated from college campuses because of the cascading repercussions of these lapses in "care and concern, health and well-being, and mutual respect."
Change starts with YOU!! Are you and your chapter contributing to the end of "fraternity?" Change happens one person at a time. Will you stand up and make a difference?
