Fraternity suspended for hazing incident

A University of Washington fraternity has been disciplined following a hazing incident at a party in September that involved scantily clad coeds and men hooded in pillow cases smearing each other with food. The UW sorority that participated in the event may also face sanctions Monday, the university said.

The food fight was "rough and potentially dangerous physical activity" to both the fraternity and sorority members involved and violated the terms of the agreement between the fraternity and the school, the university said in a letter to the fraternity.

On Wednesday, the university suspended the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, which hosted the Sept. 20 party at its house. The fraternity had a number of other violations from the summer, including underage drinking and possession of eight kegs of alcohol, said Sarah Hansen, assistant to the vice president of student affairs.

The sorority involved in the incident, Pi Beta Phi, received a letter last month spelling out the allegations against it. No disciplinary action has been taken as yet.
