Where have all the leaders gone? The Choices We Make...

These are excerpts from a recent article by Ginny Carroll in the Fall 2004 issue of the Perspective published by the Associatioin of Fraternity Advisors.

According to a 2002 survey conducted by the Josephson Institute of Ethics (of 2000 high school students):
  • 74% admitted cheating on an exam at least once in the past year
  • 38% stole something from a store within the past 12 months
  • 39% said they wouldbe willing to lie to get a good job
  • 83% admit lying to teachers in the past year
  • 43% believe "a person has to lie or cheat sometimes in order to succeed"
The world needs positive leadership and for those who choose to lead with integrity there is fulfillment in leading. It takes a special being to want to stand up and make a difference. There are two qualities inherent to positive leadership: altruism and integrity. Leadership is about a lot of things like responsibility, relationship building, accountability, discipline, perseverence, loyalty, influence, etc., but with a clear commitment to integrity an a true manner of altruism, the rest will fall in place.

Positive and effective leadership is not about looking for glory or power or prestige. Positive leadership is about your willingness to give - your time, your talent, and your wisdom.

Where are you in this mix?
