(The thing that caught my eye here was the mention of a "free speech area", which implies that most areas of the college are NOT "free speech areas". My inner activist goes tilt when I see people denied one of their basic rights. )

Three fraternities gathered Friday outside the Central Library to defy the Interfraternity Council’s decision to cancel Bid Day.
Members of the Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Chi and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternities joined in the free speech area to conduct an informal Bid Day, in which each fraternity’s new members could declare their membership. The event also signified the end of formal rush.

“I didn’t care because Greek Life can exist perfectly well without the [Interfraternity Council],” said Richie Stuart, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity member and international business senior.

There was an overall feeling of camaraderie among the fraternities, despite some rivalry between the Phi Gamma Delta and Sigma Chi fraternities, said Brad Bannister, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity member and criminal justice senior.
“The worse [Interfraternity Council] makes it, the better the relations between Greeks,” Bannister said.
Interfraternity Council President Ryan Hoopes would not comment because he said he did not know the details of what happened.
Several fraternity members felt, in light of the decision to cancel the event, that the council was not supporting the Greeks.
“It really shows that they do not want to promote Greek Life,” said Travis Edmonson, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity member and finance junior.
Mike Goad, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity member and pre-law freshman, said the unity the council wanted to see was displayed Friday.
“The Interfraternity Council is only trying to hurt the Greek system — we are trying to bring it up,” said Jerry Ehrhardt, Phi Gamma Delta fraternity member and business sophomore.
