A 21-year-old Chico State University student died Wednesday after drinking a large amount of water during pledge activity at a fraternity house, police said.
The student, Matthew William Carrington of Pleasant Hill, was in the basement of the Chi Tau house early Wednesday morning when he stopped breathing.
"Excessive water consumption had something to do with the pledge activities," said police Sgt. Dave Barrow.
The Chi Tau fraternity lost its school affiliation in 2002 because of alcohol violations, but Barrow said alcohol consumption did not appear to be a factor in Carrington's death.
It was the second death linked to fraternity hazing in Chico since 2000, when an 18-year-old student died of alcohol poisoning.
