On Monday night, a large group of Greeks assembled to reach out to the campus community.
By having tables full of pizzas, games, information setups and local favorite Gary Tunstall, they hoped to be able to offer a more inviting atmosphere than regular rushes to get to know the Greek community.
The good intentions of the event however, met some difficulties in the process. This was the first year that the Greeks put on the Spring Blitz, and the experience acted as a trial run.
"In my opinion, Spring Blitz was a failure because the lack of awareness first and foremost. There was very little time to organize and advertise this event and many students, including Greeks, knew very little of what was going on," said Mike Kolehmainen of Sigma Phi Epsilon.
The main problem seemed to lie within getting the word out to the non-affiliated constituency. Many others involved echoed the concern.
"It would have been nice to see more unaffiliated students out," said Justinian Broughton of Sigma Tau Gamma. Margaret Bush of Theta Chi Epsilon voiced a similar surprise "I didn't expect a lot of students, but I expected there would be some people there." Sigma Phi Epsilon brother Dave Mitchell suggested that something be done in the fall when the weather is better "near the dorms" to get a better reaction from the student body. The main difficulty appeared to be advertising.
You just have to hate it when you make the effort to put something together but forget to tell folks what's going on. Don't they have a major in Marketing at that school. Um, maybe not, its Mich. TECH, after all. Also, MI Eta really needs to update their website, and that is a core strength.
