Christian frat at UNC may regain status

A Christian fraternity at UNC stands to regain its official status as a student organization -- at least temporarily -- while its lawsuit against the university plays out.

A federal judge has granted a preliminary injunction ordering that, until the lawsuit is resolved, the university cannot enforce a non-discrimination policy it used to justify revoking the official student group status for Alpha Iota Omega. The three-member fraternity is dedicated to Christian evangelism.

The fraternity sued UNC last year after losing its status when it refused to sign the policy. UNC said then that it required every student group to sign the policy, which stressed that all student groups were open to all students. Fraternity leaders didn't want to be forced to welcome all students regardless of religious belief, since the organization's sole mission is to preach Christianity.
