A feud between the University of Utah's Greeks and their neighbors is brewing. This time, the battle being waged is over street parking and the noise that those living nearby say fraternity and sorority members raise in the wee hours of the night.
Neighbors say their sleep pattern is in the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. range. But the sleep behavior for many young college students is, well, different.
Combine the conflicting sleep cycles with a steady flow of students and visitors coming and going from the Greek houses after 11 p.m., and conflict is bound to develop, noted Butler Avenue resident Noel de Nevers.
"It means groups coming out of the houses talking loudly, yelling at one another, slamming car doors and burning rubber down the street, " de Nevers said. "Many of the neighbors find this annoying."
Matt Sweeney, a Phi Delta Theta member who sits on the U. Greek Council, acknowledged that it's not always easy having fraternities in residential neighborhoods.
