Sigma Phi Epsilon hosts seventh annual Queen of Hearts

Kentucky Delta at Western Kentucky University has been holding the pageant since 1999 to honor a brother killed by a drunk driver.

here was no bluffing when judges crowned Louisville freshman Courtney Day the Queen of Hearts Thursday night in the Sigma Phi Epsilon pageant.

Day said she was surprised when she was announced the Queen of Hearts because she thought her performance in the talent segment of the pageant had not gone well.

Day, who usually sings opera, was suffering from a sinus infection and gave her voice a slight rest when she decided to sing the interactive popular song "Diamonds are a Girl\'s Best Friend" instead of her usual bellowing melodies.

The pageant started in 1999 and was sponsored by the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Kyle Rindfleisch, president of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Queen of Hearts director, said the pageant was originally created to set up a memorial scholarship fund in memory of one of the fraternity brothers who was killed by a drunk driver on I-64.

The group had a moment of silence to remember him.
