This Central Florida paper looks at - among other things the hurricane damage sustained by the UCF Sig Ep house last year.
They rocked us like a hurricane
Residents of Florida have long known how devastating hurricane season could be. However, no one saw coming what took place during three weeks of last August. Three hurricanes slammed Central Florida during the course of a month, taking their toll on houses and businesses throughout Orlando and UCF.
Students and faculty who lived in the area were without power for days after Hurricane Charley swept through, and the slow movement of Hurricane Frances later took care of any damage Charley didn't cause. Then, Hurricane Jeanne reminded everyone that anything was possible ... even three hurricanes in one month.
As for the damage on campus, trees were downed everywhere, but the $12.5 million Recreation and Wellness Center took the biggest beating. Nearly 85 percent of the building's roof was ripped off, causing the ruin of 73 machines, amongst other damage. The center closed for the semester and needed millions of dollars in repairs. The Alpha Delta Pi sorority and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity houses also received significant damage, as both houses lost portions of their roofs and had to displace residents because of flooding.
The FL Mu house is still closed according to their web site. They hope to reopen this fall.
