Green for a day: Greeks clean up

David Aikin (left) and David Holzknecht, both of the Sigma Chi fraternity, pick up garbage at the corner of 11th Avenue and College Street on Saturday during the “Keep it Clean, Bowling Green” downtown clean-up.
There are small events that shape the little things about your life, and you never know when they will come.
“I’m now in favor of swallowing your gum, even if it really takes seven years to pass,” said Chi Omega member Emily Kay as she and her sorority sisters picked up the trash on the streets of Bowling Green.
As they progress toward the center of town from Chestnut Street on Eighth Avenue, a loud “EEEEWWWW” comes up from one of the Chi-Os as they find another treasure to load into their trash bag.
Meanwhile, in the Shakerag district, Sigma Phi Epsilon’s brothers are hard at work with their latex gloves accenting their shorts, ball caps and clean white T-shirts.
One of them steps forward to give their story to the news, but is dismissed by several of the brothers in unison: “You’re just a pledge.”
But brother Scott Koch of Florence doesn’t fare much better, as the others make creative suggestions for spellings of his name.
“We wanted to help clean up Bowling Green for the start of Greek Week,” Koch said.

Greek Week at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green takes a slightly different path than the usual skit, tug-o-war, and pyramid building contests.
