Sound Mind and Sound Body - University Press - Sports

"Pump" at Florida Atlantic University wrote this:
Pump's all about the traditional college experience. Academics is about more than school and classes and papers, it's about keeping fit in the gym or on the field, it's about socializing and meeting people. So, when I heard about Sigma Phi Epsilon running in the Miami Half Marathon to help a good cause, and their future goals to do the same, I thought I might talk to one of their boys and see what's going on.

Mike Miele is V.P. of Member Development and along with four other of his frat brothers ran 13.1 miles to help raise cash for Youth AIDS Awareness. "One of the goals in addition to running a great race was to help destroy the traditional "frat boy" image," Miele said. "I'm a firm believer in our motto - Sound Mind, Sound Body - and our principles are about being a leader, scholar, athlete and gentleman. This race was just the proof of that."

Miele finished in third place for the 20-24 age group and Steve Silber, a fellow frat bro, finished third for the 15-19 age group. "This is not just something you can wake up and decide to do," said Miele. "We started their training in early November. The training comprised of three week day runs ranging from 3-6.5 miles and one weekend long run ranging from 7-10 miles."

Sigma Phi Epsilon has shown some athletic prowess in other areas as well. They took the Intramural Volleyball Championship and, during Greek Week, had won at least the football and basketball competitions (press time occurred in the middle of the Week).

While SPE doesn't promote drinking and partying as a lifestyle, they know how to have a good time. They plan socials, mini-golf excursions, and movie nights with FAU sororities, making complete their goals to have a clean, wholesome college experience.

Fall is the time to pledge to SPE and other fraternities. While on-campus frat houses are a few years away, the fraternities need the support and pledges to become a strong enough voice to deserve the facilities and space. So, stay sound - in mind and body! Get your game face on!
