Spring Sing raises $6,500 for Coaches vs. Cancer

Fun, frivolity, philanthropy.
Spring Sing in Gallagher-Iba Arena drew one of the largest crowds ever on Saturday night.

In front of 3,000 people, 11 pairs of traditional sororities and fraternities celebrated the 40th anniversary for the event in style.

Putting their own twist on this year’s theme, “Get Ready for...,” each group developed its own act including costumes, choreography and original rewritten lyrics to popular songs.

At the end of the production, a three-judge panel handed out a number of awards. Kappa Delta and Sigma Phi Epsilon won “Best Lyrics,” while the team of Kappa Kappa Gamma and Beta Theta Pi was named “Most Entertaining” for their rendition of “Beauty and the Beast.” Kappa Alpha Theta and Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s Noah’s Ark act won “Best Costumes,” “Best Vocals” and “Best Choreography.”

This year marked the first time that the Spring Sing production added a philanthropy project. The project, which was headed by Benjamin Needham, gave $1 from every ticket sold, as well as donations from the crowd, to the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser. Overall, Spring Sing raised $6,500 for the charity and became the biggest contributor at the university outside of men’s basketball to the organization.

“It blew me away,” James said. “We set a goal of $5,000 and I thought it would be a push to reach that. I definitely didn’t expect this. I don’t know who Ben robbed, but he did a great job.”

Ready, set, go
