Campus Will Lift Ban on Alcohol Gradually

UC Berkeley is planning to gradually lift its ban on alcohol at fraternity and sorority events over the next two months, ensuring the moratorium will have a limited effect beyond the summer, when few Greek events are held.
The agreement, announced by university officials Tuesday, was proposed by Greek leaders and reviewed by university officials this month. Though any violation of campus rules could lead to a new ban, the university plans to allow chapter house parties under 100 people to serve alcohol on Oct. 7, and larger parties on Oct. 21.

In return, Greek leaders promised to step up their self-enforcement program and to accept large fines and probationary periods for chapters that break the rules.
