Sophomores Chris Hull, secondary education, and Tyler Cloyde, hotel and restaurant administration, work to prepare the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house.
Sigma Phi Epsilon had been planning its haunted house to raise money for hurricane relief efforts since early September. On Wednesday night, the Stillwater Fire Marshal told the group its project violated the fire code.

“It was through a miscommunication and misunderstanding. We used specific materials that were later deemed unusable, and sadly we couldn’t do the haunted house,” said Sig Ep Vice President Matt Cargill, a business administration junior.

“It’s awfully disappointing because we were doing this for charity,” Sig Ep President Matt Burckhalter, news-editorial senior, said. “It’s really sad because now we won’t be able to make a comparable donation as planned.”

Burckhalter said the $2,000 spent on the haunted house went to waste, along with the possibility to collect a large amount of money for hurricane relief.

“We were trying to make money for charity, rather than spending a lot of money on house decorations,” said Michael Warren, political science sophomore.

To make up for the loss of its haunted house, Burckhalter said a band will perform Friday night at the Sig Ep house on Fourth Street. Members will sell hot chocolate and take donations for hurricane relief.

“We just want everyone to come out and have a good time,” Warren said.

Stillwater Fire Marshal Trent Hawkins could not be reached for comment.

I guess this one goes in the "No good deed goes unpunished" file.
