Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity is working to rebuild and reorganize this year after expelling about 55 members last year following a series of events that violated national fraternity standards.

Scott Thompson, Sigma Phi Epsilon's national spokesman, said there was not a single incident that led to the expulsions but rather a "series of events," which resulted in the rebuilding. "A culture of excessive partying existed in our chapter, and its focus was not on the Balanced Man Ideal of developing a sound mind and sound body," he said.

Sigma Phi Epsilon's national headquarters did a membership review in the spring that led to the mass expulsions, reducing membership from about 75 to 20 members. Nine people currently live in the fraternity house, located at 524 Locust Lane, including a regional fraternity director.
Jesse Gaefke (junior-health policy administration) was one of the members kicked out. "We weren't given a straight reason," Gaefke said. "They wanted to get rid of all the bad apples; they wanted to change it a lot."
The members expelled from Sigma Phi Epsilon will have appeals in the coming weeks to discuss their expulsions and review their statuses in the fraternity.

[Former chapter President Pete] Bachman said the way the house is being run has completely changed, but it's all for the better.
"We need to get back on track, and we've already started to," he said. "We're looking for well-rounded guys -- people that are involved."
Bachman said Sigma Phi Epsilon started the year by recruiting about 16 pledges and hopes new members will help them restructure the fraternity.
Ah yes. The old "Flush and Rush" strategy.
