KU students help Ali Kemp foundation

Posted on Thu, Oct. 27, 2005

Several University of Kansas students raised money Wednesday in honor of Ali Kemp, a local teenager who was murdered in 2002.

Kemp, 19, was slain at a Leawood swimming pool, where she was working as a lifeguard. Authorities have accused Benjamin Appleby of killing her.

The benefit in Lawrence included a cookout, music and self-defense lessons. The money raised Wednesday will benefit The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation, which sponsors self-defense classes for women.

Two Greek organizations held the event at the Lawrence Community Center. Kemp was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority at Kansas State University, and her brother and boyfriend belong to Sigma Phi Epsilon.
