Don Wright was kind, patient

A good-by to a balanced man. I didn't know Mr. Wright, but after reading the article I wish I did.

Friends and family members remember Don Wright as a friend, gentleman, coach and dedicated golfer.

Mr. Wright was born in Lawrence. He played football for Lawrence High School, where his yearbook ambition was to become "a tall, blond boss."

After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. Wright attended the University of Kansas on the GI Bill and earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in school administration. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

One thing people remember about her dad was "that smile," she said. "He just had this wonderful grin. And everyone who ever met him would talk about what a gentleman he was, what a nice guy."

Mr. Wright is survived by his daughters and son, Jamie "Jace" Wright of Vero Beach, Fla., and five grandchildren. Family members plan to hold a private memorial ceremony on a golf course in Florida, where they will scatter his ashes on the fairway.

"He always said he wanted to be on the golf course -- not right on the fairway, but a little to the right," his daughter said. "Because that's the way he always sliced it."
Sounds like a fitting send-off for a well-loved gentleman.
